Gay Games 2010 began
With a solemn ceremony, the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne (Germany) were officially opened Saturday, with more than 9000 athletes from around the world who will compete in over 35 disciplines until 7th August. It started with the parade of athletes expected to waste much energy on each computer and representation. Somewhat combined, carrying banners and flags of their home.
According to official figures, there were 9475 participants from 65 countries. This number is less than expected (the organizers anticipated about 12,000), which however is a good number given the global economic crisis, and is very similar to the amount recorded in the Gay Games in Chicago and Montreal.
68% of participants are men. Germany is the one that registers 31% of those participants, followed by the United States representing 23% of the total.
Some of the cities with just one participant are El Salvador, Ghana, Liberia, Peru, Suriname, United Arab Emirates. About 11% of those registered to participate in football. 12% do so in water sports, followed by volleyball and tennis.
One thing to note is that many of the participants have adopted a false identity for fear of being prosecuted or losing their jobs when they return to their cities. Those who opted for change but their identities were participants from Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Mexico and Zimbabwe.
