According to official figures, there were 9475 participants from 65 countries. This number is less than expected (the organizers anticipated about 12,000), which however is a good number given the global economic crisis, and is very similar to the amount recorded in the Gay Games in Chicago and Montreal.
68% of participants are men. Germany is the one that registers 31% of those participants, followed by the United States representing 23% of the total.
Some of the cities with just one participant are El Salvador, Ghana, Liberia, Peru, Suriname, United Arab Emirates. About 11% of those registered to participate in football. 12% do so in water sports, followed by volleyball and tennis.
One thing to note is that many of the participants have adopted a false identity for fear of being prosecuted or losing their jobs when they return to their cities. Those who opted for change but their identities were participants from Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Mexico and Zimbabwe.

July 26th, 2010 admin No comments

The struggle for LGBT rights extend all the way has taken a new step. It was a U.S. proposal, the House Economic and Social Council of the UN has accepted an LGBT organization in consultative entity for the United Nations. A very important step towards visibility, as United Nations has a clear and powerful voice that is capable of defending our rights and respect for human rights in this area.
With previous support of other 200 non governmental organizations from 59 countries worldwide, the International Commission on Human Rights for Gays and Lesbians earned this status after a vote in which they counted 23 votes in favor, 13 against, 13 abstentions and 5 absences.
This acceptance by the United Nations is particularly important as the International Commission on Human Rights for Gays and Lesbians had applied for its consultative status with the UN three years ago and so far, despite meeting all the requirements, several countries UN members were opposed, even coming to present a motion of “no-action” during the vote on LGBT status of this organization.
The executive director of the LGBT organization, Cary Alan Johnson, said after acceptance of the status of UN observer: “The decision is an affirmation that the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have a place in the United Nations as part of a community of civil society. The clear message is that these voices must not be silenced and that human rights can not be denied on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity. ”

Chile: historical verdict acknowledges the right of adoption to a gay man

July 23rd, 2010 admin No comments

The Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation of Chile (Movilh) described as “historic” ruling that recognizes the right of a homosexual man to adopt his nephew.
The ruling reverses an earlier ruling of a district court had denied the custody of a child of two years and seven months of his uncle, basing his argument on the homosexual condition of the latter.
“This is a landmark decision because it sets the legal precedent that the sexual orientation of the person requesting the adoption, whether a child who is not bound by it, or is a relative, is not a factor to be considered for suitability of that person, who is seeking the adoption or custody of a child, “said the president of Movilh, Rolando Jimenez.
“We’re very pleased, we are very excited, because this creates a qualitatively different picture of how he perceived the relationship between homosexuality and child adoption or guardianship,” the activist, although the bugs on this topic do not provide case law .
