Gay tourism, a gold mine in times of crisis

November 12th, 2009 admin No comments

More control of free time and curiosity about other cultures are strong in this market. U.S. only moves 700 billion dollars.

London (AFP). In a delicate time for the tourism sector, forced to deal with spending cuts because of the international economic crisis, tourism, specially designed for the gay market has become a gold mine which can generate significant long-term benefits.

This was stated today the CEO of Out Now Consulting, Ian Johnson, who noted that only in the United Kingdom, 3 million gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender British have a total income of U.S. $ 134.152 million, which is a niche market “very attractive” at this time.
The head of this consultancy specializing in the gay area highlighted during a press conference held as part of the exhibition World Travel Market (WTM) being held in London that “can not close the door to an industry that moves 700,000 million U.S. dollars and brings together 12 million people in Latin America, 15 million Europeans and more than 1 million Australians.”

“Gays and lesbians love to travel and they like to feel welcome and be assured that they will be treated with the respect they deserve,” Johnson said.

In recent years, many cities that have realized the potential of this business and have been presented as gay tourist destination, offering routes specifically designed for this group.

This is the case of Tel Aviv, through an offer that mix culture, history, sun, beach and nightlife, is intended as a new “capital of homosexuality.” In the words of consultant Tourism City of Tel Aviv, Yaniv Waizman, how to approach and convince the informal sector is through large marketing campaigns, but “providing tourists pleasant experiences they will tell to their friends”.

The experts agree the “mouth to mouth” as the primary means by which homosexuals decide where to spend their vacation, followed closely by social networks.

Moreover, they indicate that in these tough economic times, the commitment to this niche market just a few decades ago appeared on the map is now indispensable.

In fact, according to figures from the Tourism Association of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (IGLTA, acronym in English), the purchasing power of this market, greater control of their free time and curiosity about other cultures have made the “gay tourism” has been able to withstand the crisis better than it did the “tourism heterosexual.”
